So I am going to go ahead and admit this...

I’m pretty freaking excited about having our Lost party tonight at the house. I never thought I’d get into this show, but now that I’m in it, it’s like a train wreck I just can’t turn away from. Will this season be all about time travel too? Will we really get all the answers? Will any of the characters move on to create some sort of spin-off? This will be a fun season for sure, and I’m going to need something to look forward to during this coldest month of the year!

Introducing the SarcMark

I came across this the other day, and the jury is still out on whether this is a gross development in English grammar or absolutely brilliant: I present to you the sarcmark.

A company in Michigan called Sarcasm, Inc. invented the above punctuation mark to indicate sarcasm (as if an emoticon wouldn’t do the job, but at least it looks better than ;-* or :-o or any other combination of colons, asterisks, O’s or lines).

There are a whole host of places this could become useful…comic books, op-eds, Craigslist and Chicago Reader dating ads, GChat, etc. My question is this: If we’ve been using sarcasm for 100s of years in the written language, do we need a mark now? What do you think, both from a grammar standpoint and from a design standpoint?

To read more on this new punctuation mark, check it out here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2010/jan/20/rise-of-the-sarcmark

The Ghosts of High School Past

Tonight was a strange night indeed. I have so much more to say about this but I’m really just a little too baffled and tired to explain right now…How am I supposed to react when a guy from 10 years in my past randomly starts chatting me up on Facebook, asks for my number, and then proceeds to call me up at 1:30am in the morning? Should I answer the phone? What would we talk about…the time we went to Panic in 2001, the time we stole beer from a gas station on Poplar Avenue, the times we went to that creepy old guy’s parties after football games, the time a certain someone got violent and nobody stood up for me? I just wonder…How much could these guys, the source of some of my wildest, most exciting, most depressing, and happiest moments from high school, just randomly act like nothing every happened, that there wasn’t a reason I pulled away from that group, that I really did try to move on?
